... Hey ... It's Chap Goh Meh ....

Pix of the lake at Tasik Jaya, Section 10, PJ ... on CGH celebration

Long time ago when we lived in Taman Jaya section 10, PJ ... Chap Goh Meh is one of the days that we dread because it will jam up the road to our house -- since it's an old housing area, the road to our homes are very narrow ... and the cars parked along side our houses makes it even more difficult. Sometimes we cant even get into our house ....

We had many memories of Tasik Jaya ... in the evenings if we get early back from work, we will take Muriel and Jovita for a walk in the lake ... there used to be a publick phone booth in the park and there was once I used it without realizing that someone stuck gums in the handle of the phone which stuck to my hair!!! There also trained there for our KK hike .... since there is not only place to jog .. round the lake but also exercise equipments.

Anyway ... living in Tmn Jaya for 3-4years ... think there was one year we (LN and I) did walk to Tmn Jaya to see the whole commotion of CGM celebrations ... after all, since people come from all over just to celebrate it, we must also check it out for ourselves .... low and behold .. we found the park jammed packed with people and decorated with lanterns that lighted up the place. And one interesting fact I found out is the throwing of oranges into the lake by single ladies and she will find her suitor if her orange is picked up. LN used to joke that we should throw the balance or left over oranges in our homes into the lake ... hahahha .... no wonder tak jadi kahwin2 till now cos we throw in left overs :0 ...

I googled on this festival and guess what I found? ..... just to add this into my blog to remind me of the rich culture of my roots .... the following is plucked from this site : http://www.thingsasian.com/stories-photos/2538

Since m not able to go back there to take some shoots ... so, I just curi some interesting pix as memories of the celebration in a place where I call home for 3-4years.

Chinese kids love New Year celebrations. It is a celebration full of festive cheers, good food, and not forgetting, the many ang paus (red packets that married folks give to the unmarried ones) that come our way. It was even more wonderful that Chinese New Year last a whole good fifteen days. Usually, the celebrations would have died down considerably by the tenth day for my family; however, that is not the end to a wonderful start of a new year.

On the fifteenth day of Chinese New Year, technically the final day of the festival, is a day known as Chap Goh Mei. In the Hokkien dialect, Chap Goh Mei simply means "the 15th night of Chinese New Year". Aside from being tagged as the last day, Chap Goh Mei is also known as the Chinese Valentine's Day. On a celebratory point of view, this night sees the gathering of family members as they sit down to a meal together. Offerings and prayers are also held on a grand scale on this particular night.

Just like Chinese New Year, Chap Goh Mei is celebrated with lots of fireworks and firecrackers. This much is true for countries that allow the use of these celebratory items. You will also see many homes gaily decorated with red lanterns and bright lights to mark the end of an auspicious occasion. In temples, thanksgivings are held while many people would be asking for the God of Prosperity to endow them with success and wealth for the coming year.

In some parts of town, you will also be able to witness cultural performances, lantern displays, lion dances and the famous Chingay (flag-balancing) procession. On a legendary point of view, Chap Goh Mei being regarded as the Chinese Valentine's Day, also brings forth lots of fun and gaiety. It is well-known that Chap Goh Mei is a night of courtship and has since been the forerunner in promoting match-making. On this night, many young ladies would make their way to the temples, dressed in their best, with hope of finding prospective suitors.

One of the fun activities that take place on this auspicious night includes the throwing of oranges into the sea by these young maidens. It is without a doubt, the most popular and colorful moment in the history of Chap Goh Mei. It is believed that by throwing tangerines into the sea, these young girls would find themselves a good husband. For many, the act of throwing tangerines into the sea also signifies that these women are available for marriage. It is also said that if someone else who sees the floating tangerine in the water and picked it up, that generally means that the single who threw it would be able to find a good spouse.

Funnily, while many of us may have imagined that such a tradition is passed forth from China, it is strangely not. In fact, this interesting practice originated from a little Malaysian island known as Penang. This took place some time towards the end of the 19th century. On a yearly basis, a large crowd would flock to the Esplanade thus jamming up the roads badly. On top of that, tangerines are sold at an exorbitantly high price but then again, who says romance is cheap?

Another story of the Chinese Valentine's Day also states that this is the only day in the whole year that young maidens are allowed to stroll the streets. However, they must be accompanied by a chaperon. Knowing this fact, many young men would gather around with hope of catching glimpses of these lovely maidens. According to the legend, there will be a matchmaker from the moon who would tie red strings of destiny on their legs. As a result, the couple will end up being together.

Although "young maidens" flock the streets freely these days thus the matchmaker from moon is not exactly needed anymore, yet the tradition of throwing tangerines into the sea still prevails. While many no longer believe in the legend, yet it is still a fun thing to do or observe. Sadly, not many people in the big cities are practicing this custom anymore. However, the tradition prevails nonetheless.

... A Tribute to Friends from Old Days ...

As I look back, God has blessed me with good friends at every stage of my journey .... right from kecik2 time, I've got lots of friends and from the pool of friends, good friends .... spiritual friends .... "worldly" friends .... friends for every kind of need and situation I have .. my Father indeed knows how to take care of His daughter ....

The issue of friendship and I have come very far .... I remember when I was in standard 5 or 6 ... I had a gang that I click with -- we were almost like the team of Famous 5 : Regina Kok (father is a major in the TLDM, she was transfer to KL in form 1), Su Ee, Shirley, Jeje and I. Some how this group sort of like disperse when Regina went to KL. O yea .. there was Evelyn Lian as well ... but she was not that close to us as she lives super far ... her Dad is a manager in one of the estates / plantations before Pantai Remis I think ... cant remember where it is ... but it was far. Went to her house once .... her house has a swimming pool.

Then in form 1 I hanged out with Asma for awhile... she lives in Lekir .... but at the same time, my friendship with Sue Mei begin to develop and takes a spin when we started going MIF together. Suzie came into the picture as well here. We also had Mrs Nagarajah's Maths tuition in command as well. With more common grounds, our friendship begin to grow --- I recall many overnights in Sue Mei's house .... more of the one in Taman Singa and not the one opposite Chung Chen. Sue Mei and I practically went every where together .... then, I met Foong Lun ... in my 1st MYF camp, Convent Cameron Highlands - she prayed for me to receive the gift of tongues and I did!!! way back in my mid teens ... at that time, I really dono what it was ... hahha ...

Then in form 6, I met new friends who became the few that God blessed me with -- who held me in their prayers .... who cried when I cried ... laughed when I laughed ..... Lang Nguk .. who taught me to look at things on the brighter funny side and her famous statement that made a deep impact in my life - friends are like flowers ... it needs lots of sacrifice, nourishment ... lots of sunshine & TLC ... and Choo Leng .. the fusion of cina moi & a white on the outside but yellow in the inside ... but this 2 precious friends and I have journeyed far and wide together ...

In varsity days ... I was close to 2 coursemates - Jane Lee and .. Ai Ling (think that's her name) .. wah ... see if I dont pen down .. I will forget all their names ... but after grad... I lost contact with them. Then off course there was Wui2 ... my twin sister in campus ... both of us looks alike with the same hairstyle .. same style of dressing .... :0 still the same ... thank God that when we met up once a while ... we are still able to share and connect like old days ...

Off course, in varsity ... my friendship with Wendy became closer though I have known her since MYF days. We became closer as we lived together in Charis House in Minden Heights. God send her as a friend who stood by me when I was falling -- she came all the way from Bkt Jalil to Sri Damansara just to hang out with me ... pray for me and brought me to church -- DUMC .. and later the Family Camp in PD ... :0 ... thanks Wendy ....

When I started working ... friends seem to have shrunk .... we do not have time to cultivate friendship ... except for working colleagues .... LN and I lived together for 3 years in Section 10 .. fun times ... right opposite of CK & CY. During this time, I got reconnected with Susie and Jeye .. Jeye was doing law in MU and live in Section 5 -- so ... dinner time ... we always hang out ..

As time move on ... friends seems to set smaller but God reserved some close ones that stick with me through thick and thin ....

Eventually when I left work and started to work in church -- I hanged out with another 5 people ... Felix, Shally, Barry, Dorithy & Doreen ... I seem to connect and click with Shally the most ... perhaps its our background and life experiences .... this Dot .... quite cute la ... she will go the extra mile if u need help .. rber the 1st time she came and visit me in TTC ... betul2 like aunty ... bring Milo (I dont drink Milo but cos of her I occasionally drink it now!!!), instant noodles ... to visit the inmate in TTC "house arrest" .. then .. there was once .. she cooked soup ... brought them all the way from JB .. through the immigrations .... hop off the bus gave it to me .. and hopped on the bus again to go to TCA .. what a friend .. :0 ... God's blessing ....

In TTC, the Lord brought Pris and Li as my hang out buddies and Ah Yi as my prayer partner ... :0 ... and the rest of the class ... whom we fought so much .... cried so much .. laughed so much ... and prayed together .. these are a special group of friends who will be my strength, comfort and counsel as I journey on serving HIm ....

Friends come and go ... some stay ... some go ... one thing for sure ... God will always bring us friends because no man can live as an island ... all of us needs companionship & emotional support!

Memory Lane : Varsity Life

When I walked the grounds of University of Chiang Mai (UniCM) ... especially the Humanities School and the Tourism & Hotel Faculty .... it really reminded me of my varsity days ....

I know I am still a student and still going to school, live in the hostel .... but a college and a varsity .... different feeling la ... perhaps UniCM has similarities with USM ... hilly .... lots of trees .... the leaves on the field ...

I remember how I use to drive from Minden gate up through the hilly slopes, pass the Chancellor's Residence ... thru Pusat Seni .... Social Science and Humanities School and right up to the School of Mass Comm .... going thru the hills and slope .... if the season is right ... I will drive thru flame of the forest or yellow or purple flowers (dono what's the name) ... syyoookkk ... but malam2 ... scare want pass thru Pusay Seni cos ppl say its haunted ..:0...

Off course one cannot forget the beauty of Penang Bridge that we can see from the top of the hill and just outside the Chancellor's Residence. This is THE spot for pat tor ... as well a good spot for Quiet Time --- u can catch the sunset from here .... the full moon ... wow ... cantik & menawan and the view of the sea ... USM has a very romantic setting and feel to it ... This scenic view is so clear in my mind now but m sure if I were to go back to USM now, it will somehow look different.

Yes, I had good sweet memories of USM and varsity days .... those were happy carefree days that is full of fun and crazy stuff .... I would ride my Yahama 80 all over the island -- to hunt for food .... to have a break .... or to look for inspiration for my assignment or shots for my Photo J paper ....

Those years seem to have influenced the way I think and see things now ... reading in between the lines and critical, analytical mind .... the impact of Zaharom Nain and Kamal Mustapha (or something like that his name ... I rber him as a gold fish eye man .... tall and lanky). They really helped me to see things beyond the surface .. oh yes ... how can I forget Pn Zaharah who taught me Critical Reading & Writing ... Shakila (Kamal Mustapa's wife)

Meanwhile, UniCM has a lake, it over looks the mountains and the School of Humanities has lots of man made water fountains. Lots of motorbikes around as well .... typical USM in the 90s.....

Guess all of us will be proud of our own schools and have found memories our times when we were in school .... :0 There is indeed a time and season for everything .... and I thank God for my time and season in USM!
